Going Green
The environment is a growing concern for many people. Going green has been has been an increasingly common phrase for products, organizations, and companies.
Locally, we can see signs of the movement as well; even if it seems as if we’re throwing away our recycling! If you are not familiar with Harrisonburg’s recycling, Harrisonburg recently switched to an all in one system where the recycling is separated from the trash in a waste facility.
Seriously though, we can see the importance of going green increasing through local organizations such as Eastern Mennonite University (EMU). EMU boasts “having the largest solar installation in the state of Virginia in 2010 and continue to lead the way.”
Going Green in Real Estate
Recently, the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Association of Realtors decided to join a larger MLS system. This MLS sytem now allows us to gather more statistics on The Valley. In addition, the new system allowed for listing agents to market green features of a home.
As you can see from the chart above, of all homes sold this far in 2016, 11% were marked to have green features. It’s important to understand that this is new to the local MLS and agents may not be used to advertising green features. In addition, features such as energy efficient may not trigger an agent to market the house has having green features.
