There’s something about sipping a glass of locally crafted wine while gazing out at the Blue Ridge Mountains that makes you feel like you’ve found one of Virginia’s best-kept secrets. The truth is, the Shenandoah Valley has been quietly building a reputation as one of the state’s most exciting wine regions — and the vineyards near Harrisonburg are at the heart of it all.
Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or someone who simply enjoys a beautiful afternoon on a sun-drenched patio, the wineries within a short drive of Harrisonburg offer an experience that goes far beyond what’s in the glass. From Tuscan-inspired villas to rustic log barn tasting rooms, each vineyard has its own personality — and each one gives you another reason to love calling the Shenandoah Valley home.
The Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail
Before we dive into individual wineries, it’s worth knowing about the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail. This collection of member vineyards spans the Shenandoah Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA), one of Virginia’s officially recognized wine-growing regions. The AVA designation means the valley’s unique combination of limestone-rich soils, mountain-sheltered microclimates, and moderate temperatures creates ideal growing conditions for a variety of grape varietals.
The Wine Trail makes it easy to plan a day (or weekend) of vineyard hopping, with each member winery welcoming guests into their tasting rooms to sample wines made from locally grown grapes. Many of the wineries listed below are proud members of the trail.
CrossKeys Vineyards
Location: 6011 E. Timber Ridge Rd., Mt. Crawford, VA 22841 (about 15 minutes from Harrisonburg)
Hours: Open daily, 11 AM–7 PM (April–October) and 11 AM–5 PM (November–March)
CrossKeys Vineyards is often the first name that comes up when locals talk about wine in the Harrisonburg area, and for good reason. This family-owned, 125-acre estate winery is anchored by a stunning Tuscan-style villa that feels like a little slice of Italy tucked into the Shenandoah Valley.
The tasting room offers daily wine tastings, and if you want to go deeper, educational tours of the winemaking process run at 12 PM, 2 PM, and 4 PM each day (about 30 minutes, $5 per person). But the real draw for many visitors is the on-site Bistro, which serves gourmet meals with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their Sunday Brunch is particularly popular — arrive early if you want the best patio seats.
CrossKeys also hosts a Friday night Concert Series and monthly Salsa Nights, making it a go-to spot for date nights and weekend outings alike. It’s such a magical setting that our own team member Sarah chose to have her wedding here — and anyone who’s seen that Tuscan villa surrounded by vineyard rows can understand why.
Bluestone Vineyard
Location: 4828 Spring Creek Rd., Bridgewater, VA 22812
Hours: Monday–Saturday 11 AM–6 PM, Sunday 1 PM–6 PM
Nestled in Bridgewater just south of Harrisonburg, Bluestone Vineyard has earned a loyal following with its selection of over 20 award-winning wines, all made from Virginia-grown fruit. The Tasting Room sits in the lower level of their Meeting House at the top of the hill, and the views from up there are worth the visit alone — sweeping panoramas of the Allegheny Mountains with the winery and vineyard stretching out below.
The vibe at Bluestone is relaxed and welcoming. You can enjoy wine by the bottle, a curated by-the-glass menu, or a full tasting at the bar. They offer a small bites menu of meats and cheeses, but you’re also welcome to bring your own food — making it a perfect spot for a picnic afternoon. And yes, your well-behaved dog on a leash is welcome both inside the tasting room and outside on the grounds.
The vineyard has become one of our team member Erica’s favorite wine destinations in the area, and they keep things lively with their “Toast the Weekend” live music events. If you’re visiting with a larger group (eight or more), you’ll want to schedule an appointment ahead of time with a deposit for your tasting fee. And here’s a fun local connection: the owner also owns Root Stock Wine Bar downtown, so you can enjoy Bluestone wines right in the heart of Harrisonburg too.
Brix & Columns Vineyards
Location: 1501 Dave Berry Rd., McGaheysville, VA 22840 (about 20 minutes from Harrisonburg, 7 minutes from Massanutten Village)
Hours: Monday–Thursday 11 AM–6 PM, Friday 11 AM–6 PM, Saturday 11 AM–5 PM, Sunday 12 PM–6 PM
Brix & Columns Vineyards brings together southern charm, stunning valley views, and award-winning wines in one elegant package. Established in 2016 with their first vines planted in the upper vineyard, the winery opened its tasting room in spring 2017 and has been growing ever since.
They currently cultivate seven varietals on the property: Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Petit Manseng, Petit Verdot, Vidal Blanc, and Viognier. The diversity of their plantings reflects the valley’s versatile growing conditions — you can find everything from crisp whites to bold reds, all estate-grown.
Beyond the wine, Brix & Columns has also become a popular venue for weddings and private events, which tells you something about the beauty of the setting. Even on a casual visit, you’ll understand why couples choose to celebrate here.
Marceline Vineyards
Location: 5887 Cross Keys Rd., Mount Crawford, VA 22841
Hours: Wednesday–Thursday 11 AM–6 PM, Friday 11 AM–8 PM, Saturday 11 AM–6 PM, Sunday 1 PM–7 PM (closed Monday–Tuesday)
Marceline Vineyards is one of those places that feels like a well-kept local secret. The tasting room is housed in a beautiful log barn surrounded by patios, gardens, and rolling hills of grapevines — it’s the kind of setting that makes you want to slow down and stay a while.
The vineyard is owned and operated by Susan Rudolph Pleasant, who bought the farm in 2005 and went on to earn certification in oenology and viticulture. That dedication to the craft shows in every bottle. Her children help run the family operation, giving Marceline a warm, personal feel that larger wineries sometimes lack.
The Friday evening extended hours (until 8 PM) make Marceline an especially nice option for an end-of-week wind-down. Grab a glass, settle into one of the patio chairs, and watch the sun set behind the Blue Ridge. Since it’s just down Cross Keys Road from CrossKeys Vineyards, these two make a perfect pairing for a relaxed half-day wine outing.
White Oak Lavender Farm & The Purple WOLF Vineyard
Location: 2644 Cross Keys Rd., Harrisonburg, VA 22801
White Oak Lavender Farm is truly one of a kind. Part lavender farm, part vineyard, part agritourism destination — there’s nothing quite like it in the valley. The Haushalter family has been welcoming visitors since 2008, and the 10-acre property has grown into something special.
With over 8,000 lavender plants and approximately 3,000 grapevines, White Oak produces wines, craft beers, and hard ciders with unique lavender influences. The Purple WOLF tasting room is where you’ll find their beverage offerings, but the experience extends well beyond wine. Visitors can explore interactive gardens, visit a butterfly nursery, meet farm animals (including alpacas, miniature horses, and free-range exotic hens), enjoy live music, and sample lavender ice cream.
This is a particularly great stop for families or anyone who wants their vineyard visit to include a bit of adventure beyond the tasting room. And since it’s also on Cross Keys Road, it rounds out the perfect trio with CrossKeys Vineyards and Marceline for a full day of wine country exploration.
Planning Your Vineyard Tour
One of the best things about wine country near Harrisonburg is how close everything is. You could easily visit two or three of these wineries in a single afternoon, especially since several are clustered along Cross Keys Road south of the city. Here are a few tips for making the most of your visit:
Start with a plan but stay flexible. The Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail website is a great resource for mapping out your route and checking hours. But leave room to linger — if you find a patio with the perfect view and a glass you love, there’s no reason to rush.
Designate a driver. This one is straightforward but important. Many of the wineries are connected by scenic country roads that are beautiful to drive, but safety always comes first. Consider arranging a designated driver or looking into local transportation options.
Check for events. Many of these vineyards host live music, seasonal festivals, and special tasting events throughout the year, especially in spring and summer. A quick check of their websites or social media pages before you go can help you time your visit for something special.
Bring a cooler. Most wineries sell bottles to take home, and you’ll almost certainly find a few you want to bring back. A cooler in the car keeps everything at the right temperature on the drive home.
